GARY LINEKER IN SHOCK SIGNING FOR LALIGA TV

Gary Lineker will host top live LaLiga action after a surprise announcement that he will join the Spanish league’s TV channel.

LaLiga TV has confirmed Lineker has agreed a “multi-year deal” to present key fixtures as well as featuring on the VIVA LaLiga TV programme.

He’ll continue to host the BBC’s Match of the Day Premier League highlights and live FA Cup coverage. His contract with the corporation is not exclusive and was recently extended – see HERE.

Lineker will no longer be part of BT Sport’s Champions League coverage after announcing in the summer he was leaving the broadcaster despite a generous offer to stay – see HERE.

The former Barcelona striker said he was “thrilled” to be part of LaLiga TV and had watched the channel “every weekend for the last two seasons”.

LaLiga TV is available in the UK through Premier Sports and Amazon Prime Video Channels. It screens every LaLiga TV game live (although games which clash with the UK’s 3pm Saturday blackout restrictions are screened on delay). Some matches are shown free-to-air on Premier’s spin-off channel FreeSports.

This season’s LaLiga fixtures kick off on Friday August 13.

Gary Lineker has agreed a new five-year deal with the BBC – although he’ll take a 23 per cent pay cut to remain with the corporation.

The 59-year-old will remain at the helm of Match of the Day as well as hosting the BBC’s coverage of the FA Cup alongside the Euros and World Cup tournaments. He’ll also continue to front the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

His new deal is not exclusive meaning he’ll also be able to continue his work on BT Sport where he anchors the broadcaster’s Champions League coverage.

“I love working with the BBC and am very proud to continue to be part of their outstanding football team,” the former England striker said.

“I’m looking forward to the next five years with a European Championship and World Cup on the horizon, it’s exciting times for me and the team.”

The BBC’s head of TV sport, Philip Bernie, described Lineker as “the outstanding football presenter of his time.”

“The BBC is extremely pleased to have him leading our coverage so exceptionally for another five years,” Bernie commented.

Lineker was originally a pundit on Match of the Day before taking over as the host in 1999.
