Premier Sports and FreeSports seal La Liga TV deal

Mzwm-ZYz

Premier Sports has sealed a deal to show live La Liga action for the next three seasons – with selected games being shown free-to-air on sister channel FreeSports.

It means every La Liga game will be shown on UK TV live, apart from those that clash with the 3pm Saturday blackout period which will be shown on delay.

In addition to games shown on Premier, LaLiga TV – a 24-hour dedicated channel to Spain’s top division – will also be available to Premier subscribers, initially on the online Premier Player and soon as part of a Premier bundle of channels on Sky. Virgin will also offer it at a later date.

LaLiga TV shows live games as well as magazine shows LaLiga World, VIVA LaLiga and The LaLiga Show.

The deal ends an uncertain time for LaLiga on UK TV after it refused to award the rights due to what the league described as unsatisfactory bids from broadcasters.

A short-term deal saw matches from the first three match rounds shown on live on ITV 4 free-to-air.

It’s not clear how many free-to-air matches will be shown by Premier, but over the next couple of weekends they are making two games available live on FreeSports.

FreeSports will show a weekly La Liga highlights show as well.

The first game of the new agreement is on Friday (September 13) with Mallorca v Athletic Club on FreeSports and Premier Sports 1.

ITV seal short-term La Liga deal

ITV4

ITV has struck what appears to be a short-term deal to show the opening few matches from the new La Liga season.

UK TV fans were facing a blackout from the Spanish competition after La Liga said no “satisfactory” bids had been made by broadcasters when the rights were put up for grabs in the summer.

ITV and Premier Sports stepped in to take on some live games in the final months of last season after online-only subscription service Eleven Sports flopped.

Eleven were showing all La Liga matches outside the UK Saturday 3pm-5pm blackout period after wrestling exclusive rights from Sky Sports which had shown the competition for more than 20 years.

Only three games have been confirmed as being shown on ITV 4 from the new season with discussions believed to be on-going for a longer-term arrangement.

LaLiga set to kick off with no UK TV coverage

LaLigalogo

Spain’s top football division is set to kick off with no UK TV coverage after LaLiga officials refused to award a deal due to what it described as a lack of satisfactory bidders.

Last season started with online streaming operation Eleven Sports snatching the exclusive live rights from long-term holders Sky Sports.

But Eleven struggled to attract subscribers and failed to secure a television channel slot on either the Sky or BT platform and the rights had to be renegotiated.

The season ended with Eleven sharing the rights with Premier Sports and ITV 4.

The rights to all LaLiga matches were put up for grabs again this summer with UK broadcasters having until July 25 to make their bids.

“After assessing all bids and required additional documentation from participating bidders, LaLiga has declared the tender null and void because no satisfactory bids were received.” Joris Evers, head of communications for the league, said

“LaLiga thanks all participants in the tender for their interest and shall inform soon about next steps,” he added.

It now remains to be seen whether a new UK TV deal can be agreed in time for the season kick-off on August 16.
