EVERY game from this summer’s Women’s World Cup will be screened FREE-TO-AIR on BBC and ITV after the two broadcasters sealed a deal with FIFA – with just weeks to spare from the tournament kicking off.
FIFA officials had claimed there could be a European TV blackout if broadcasters didn’t stump up better offers for the rights to the live matches.
Many of the games kick off outside of prime time viewing hours due to matches being staged in Australia and New Zealand so TV executives said they wouldn’t overpay for the rights.
But under a blanket deal brokered through the European Broadcasting Union (which also represents broadcasters in France, Germany, Italy and Spain) all 64 matches will be shown on either BBC or ITV with the final live on both BBC One and ITV 1.
The tournament starts on July 20 with England’s first game against Haiti on July 22 in Brisbane.
BBC and ITV will now meet to decide who shows which games across the tournament which ends on August 20.
EIGHT live TV games from the FA Cup fourth round will be screened FREE-TO-AIR on BBC and ITV.
Each club involved will receive a broadcast fee of £110,000. The games will also be available on BBC iPlayer and ITVX.
